Amazing Amphibians in Oregon

By Lucy Herring

Dottie, Mom, and I went  on a road trip to Oregon on August 8th, 2024. We spent two days driving and we eventually got to the Baldwin’s tree farm at 4:00 pm the second day. The trees were emerald green and the grass was a golden yellow. I noticed they have a big round pool full of tadpoles and frogs! I got closer and noticed the water in the pool was green. I think it was green because of algae. I reached in and touched a tadpole and then I caught a frog. Owen, Henry, and their family played and captured frogs with me. I was very happy not to be alone. Catching frogs and tadpoles I noticed some tadpoles had zero legs, 2 legs and even 4 legs! I noticed that the tadpoles’ tummies have spirals on them. Some tadpoles even had eyes on the top of their little heads. The frogs are only a centimeter long. When we went to bed that night the owls were hooting, the squirrels were screaming and the trees were swaying. I felt like that was a good day to remember.

  2. I show a frog the other day while picking blueberries. Here on the Tundra burrow down and go dormant over the winter. It’s amazing to think at 30 below they are alive down there and survive. Sounds like such a fun trip Ms. Lucy. Hugs from Alaska from Auntie Beverly
