Since the end of June, I have drawn an astounding amount of birds. One skill you may notice is how I mixed different colored pencils to imitate iridescence, shade, and wet feathers. Another technique I tested is outlining my drawings in micron pens. So far these techniques have been working quite well for me.
The following pictures were drawn from a photograph. I have been drawing from someone else’s picture because I struggle with correctly proportioned songbirds. The photos also provide an opportunity to draw birds I have never seen before. The books that inspired the drawings below are Birds of North America by Noel Grove, The Encyclopedia of North American Birds, and Mark Carwardine’s Birds in Focus. I hope you enjoy!

Snow Goose
Anser caerulescens

Sandhill Crane
Grus canadensis

Blue Tit
Parus caeruleus

Northern Pygmy-Owl
Glaucidium gnoma

Green-winged Teal
Anas crecca

Common Kingfisher
Alcedo atthis

Sandhill Crane
Grus canadensis

Masked Trogon
Trogon personatus

Lazuli Bunting
Passerina amoena

Northern Hawk-owl
Surnia ulula

Dear Dottie, your drawings are amazing. How did you get so good at drawing? We like the kingfisher drawing the best because they are fighting.
