For the last two days, I have been sketching birds from my new Sibley’s Guide to Birds. I sketched the Blue-and yellow Macaw, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Belted Kingfisher, Baltimore Oriole, Wood Duck, American Kestrel, Great-gray Owl, Varied Thrush and California Quail. I chose these birds because they are detailed and difficult. They are difficult because I had never sketched them and I sketched them without instructions. My favorites are the Great-gray Owl because the one I sketched had a funny face, and the California Quail because this is the first time I sketched it without instructions.
While I was sketching, I noticed that the kingfishers had a little white marking on their head. When I looked at the other fish eaters (Osprey and Bald Eagle) they also had white on their head. Papa thought it was something to do with the reflection of the sun when fishing or seeing underwater. Sketching and drawing is one of my favorite things to do.
Great job, Dottie.
